James Blake and Chance The Rapper never lived together, sorry
James Blake has released a statement debunking the myth that he and Chance The Rapper shacked up in a creative pad in Los Angeles.
The story emerged in 2014 after Chance posted a pic (above) of the pair captioned: "All settled in the new crib. And there's a fire pit on my balcony.@jamesblake"
Clarifying the rumours in a new interview with GQ, Chance explained that the two actually were set to live together in a "big-ass rapper mansion" called Koi Kastle in North Hollywood. Sounds perfect, right? Apparently that was when things soured, with Blake removing his name from the lease with Chance left to foot a hefty rent bill. “I had the pool. I had the movie theater. I had the basketball court. I was doing it real big. I was Xanned out every fucking day,” the rapper told GQ.
Blake, however, remembers very differently, calling Chance's actions "creepy":
"We’d very loosely and playfully daydreamed about getting somewhere to live/work for a little while, but never discussed specifics. We wanted to work together on something, so Chance invited me to the house he said he’d rented for him and his friends... I turned up and he told me my name was on the lease, which was creepy because I’d never signed anything. I’d never and still have never heard of Koi Kastle, had never seen a picture of the home and had never been to or known the existence of the area it was in. Then he went on MTV and said we were living together, and so to this day many people still think we are."
GQ were initially unable to reach Blake for comment, but "afterwards he supplied this statement in response."
Blake's latest LP was released The Colour In Anything was released in May. Chance's latest Coloring Book was also released in May. They might not have ever been roommates, but they've gotta be in sync on some level.
