Jack White gets theatre named after him as he saves Masonic Temple from closure
White Stripes man Jack White sure has been in a charitable mood lately. First he reissued tons of pre-war blues recordings for no profit, then he offered to press the Great Gatsby soundtrack on actual gold and platinum vinyl, now he’s gone and saved a Masonic Temple in his hometown of Detroit from closure.
The Detroit’s Masonic Temple was recently under threat after being unable to pay a $142,000 tax bill. But luckily White, whose mother used to work there as an usher, decided to lump up the cash before its 3 June deadline.
Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words,” said the Temple’s Association President Roger Sobran.
In return, the society has decided to rename a theatre in the building the Jack White Theater.
