Emilíana Torrini, When Saints Go Machine and Rytmeklubben share their thoughts on Ja Ja Ja Festival
Upon the exciting news of Ja Ja Ja Festival 2014, we thought it best to ask some of the acts what we could expect. We've gathered the thoughts of a few of the artists performing this year such as Denmark's When Saints Go Machine, Norway's Rytmeklubben, as well as Icelandic headliner Emilíana Torrini.
Though tight-lipped on specifics, the indominatable Torrini is keen to give Ja Ja Ja her all: "It's amazing! It's really nervewracking because I don't usually do it, it's not something I'd normally do at all - I usually say no! But I've said yes this time just because I really wanted to play the festival! I'm gonna throw myself into it after this next busy few days. I'm so excited about all of it, and not just the music..."
Rytmeklubben's Henrik Haraldsen Sveen and Ole Torjus Hofvind were equally enthusiastic about the event: "It feels so great to be announced! It's such a cool festival, and we've never played Britain before so we're excited to mix the two firsts. We're not sure what we're gonna bring yet, but hopefully we'll play some new songs we've never done before. I think we're also planning staying for a week to maybe go in the studio and work with some UK artists, but we don't know for sure yet... we can't wait to catch Nils Bech. He's the same night as us, also from Norway, and he does so much interesting stuff."
The pair were also pretty excited about the non-music side of the festival, namely the food and films: "We like to eat a lot of food, and we love movies. Hopefully we can combine the two. It'll be optimal for us."
When Saints Go Machine's vocalist, Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild, is another who can't wait to get this year's event underway - though for a few other reasons: "I've seen Jenny Wilson is announced!? I just missed her this summer and I'd love to see her. Torrini as well will be amazing, she's really good pop, I hope loads of people go and see her... Blaue Blume are great, I've seen then in Denmark beofre, it's some young lads and I'd like to see them outside Denmark. I saw them at a festival in the suburbs of Copenhagen, and I really want to see them do a club show."
Vonsild still has his eye on When Saints Go Machine however: "Last time we played a Ja Ja Ja thing was when we released the album before last [Konkylie]. It's a good line-up. I'm looking forward to returning to the UK. I feel it's time to play there again, and come back to one of the places we love playing most." He also gives a thumbs-up to the food side: "With the Scandinavian summers not being long, we have a lot of traditional winter food, and some of it will come close to English cuisine, like roast pork. You guys have pickled eggs, they're odd. I'll bring pickled herring."
On top of the mind-boggling array of aural deliciousness, Ja Ja Ja Festival 2014 also plays host to a plethora of food/drink and film events. While that line-up is still being tinkered with and the announcements proper are forthcoming, we can reveal that Björk's Biophilia Live will be shown as part of the film programme in The Great Hall. While it's included in the tickets (be they weekend or day passes), there is a limited capacity, so make sure you pick up the free add-on here.
