IDLES return with surprise new single "Mr. Motivator"
IDLES have surprise-released their new single "Mr. Motivator", which was disguised as a workout class from the band's bassist Dev.
Last Friday, IDLES uploaded a brief video clip with their bassist Dev advertising an at-home workout class taking place this evening, and shared another clip yesterday (18 May) continuing to tease the class.
Some fans were hoping for it to be an actual workout session, with one Reddit user writing, "Hope there’s a shock twist and they teach us how to fight a man with a perm". Unfortunately there are no tutorials to fight a man with a perm, and IDLES' statement still stands, "Never Fight A Man With A Perm".
Instead, the workout class was a front to disguise their surprise new single "Mr. Motivator".
Lead vocalist Joe Talbot says of their first single of 2020, "We want to start this journey with a means to not only encapsulate the album's sentiment, but to encourage our audience to dance like no one is watching and plough through these dark times with a two tonne machete of a song and the most beautiful community of scumbags ever assembled. Let’s go. All is love."
The new single is also a taste of their third album, which will follow on from their 2019 Mercury Prize-nominated album Joy as an Act of Resistence.
IDLES are yet to announce details of their new LP, but while they were working on it they did reveal they were in the studio with Warren Ellis of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and also confirmed Kenny Beats as one of the producers.
