Has someone just found a lost Sufjan Stevens album?
Someone appears to have discovered an unreleased Sufjan Stevens record from 1998 in a dumpster in Brooklyn.
It's apparently called Stalker, and has full art and tracklisting, plus a goofy doodle on the CD-R. It was found in the trash outside of Stevens' studio, and was briefly streamed online before the finder decided to U-turn on his choice after Stevens' label Asthmatic Kitty responded:
"Hiya! John from AKR here," begins the post. "Well, this is new to us here at the label! As someone who's been privy over the years to unreleased music from several artists, I'd say you have received a special gift. You're hearing something only a few have ever heard. It's a rare honor. Whenever an artist sends me music early I take it very seriously. I would rather you not share someone's music without their permission; Sufjan or anyone else's. If it was in the trash, there was a reason (most likely the expectation that it'd sit in a huge landfill outside of NYC). AKR won't send any 'severe takedowns' or legal notices. We don't do that. Instead, I'm asking you, as someone who's also had the special privilege of hearing unreleased music, to politely ask that you keep it to yourself."
As to why it was never released? Well apparently we just have to trust Smurfjam's opinions. "Like any great musician Sufjan writes a ton of music. 99% of it is unreleased for whatever reason. Sometimes you just have to trust the smurfjam
John from AKR finishes by saying: "Again, no clue if this is legit. Who knows! Let's just say it's a clever street team grassroots social media snapchat marketing strategy to direct you to buy tickets for some upcoming festival dates: http://tour.sufjan.com/ You'll even hear songs Sufjan actually wants you to hear!"
As Reddit commentors have noted, Stevens spoke in an interview about writing songs about stalkers.
Stereogum have actually spoken to the man who found the record - Marc Rebillet. He says of its legitimacy: "Hoax? Whatever. They can think what they want. I have neither the time nor the desire to prove its authenticity. It’s real."
Some are still dubious however, noting Rebillet's connection to an elaborate iPhone tale from 2007.
The album is reportedly from 1998, but Asthmatic Kitty wasn't founded until 1999 - although it wouldn't be ridiculous for Stevens to print the name of the label he was probably planning to help start.
