Gwenno airs "Tir Ha Mor" from upcoming Cornish-language album Le Kov
Gwenno has unveiled new song "Tir Ha Mor", the lead single from her upcoming record Le Kov - a record sung entirely in the Cornish language.
"We drove to St. Ives and marvelled at the crashing waves, went up the coast, past Zennor and arrived at Levant Mine to pause for thought and remember those who had given and lost so much to the land," says Gwenno of the track's accompanying visuals. "All we could do was appreciate the rugged landscape, as so many had done before us."
"We drove back to Cardiff and I mulled over the merits of dancing to your own song, and concluded that it's alright to do so sometimes," adds Gwenno. "Cornish Abstract Landscape artist, Peter Lanyon, Marghek an Gwyns ('Rider Of The Wind', his Cornish Gorsedd bardic name) glided over the land to get a better feel of Cornwall, and 'Tir Ha Mor' ('Land And Sea') is inspired by his methods and muse. I filmed what was in front of me, which is nowhere near the same level of commitment, but it is my interpretation of what I saw and felt and that, I hope, is worth something."
Unlike award-winning solo debut Y Dydd Olaf, upcoming long-player Le Kovwon't be in Welsh - Gwenno is moving south a bit to Cornwall, and the entirety of her next record will be in the region's native tongue. The album, created with longtime producer Rhys Edwards, also features an Aphex Twin cover and the rap talents of Gruff Rhys.
The wide-ranging collection of songs serve a variety of purposes: it's a "document of a living language", an exploration of identity and language (and the intrinsic interplay of the two), a look at the history and culture of a specific region, and a psychedelic opus that reaches into every corner of the mind.
"This album is a combination of accepting the culture which your parents have valued enough to want to pass on to you, regardless how small, and utilising it in a positive way to try and make sense of the world around you," explains Gwenno. "It’s also about having to accept and respect the nuances that make us all different and discovering that all of our stories share the same truth."
Gwenno has also announced a new UK tour, which kicks off 20 January at Holyhead's Ucheldre Centre and finishes at Hoxton Hall in London on 12 April (it's not a continuous trek, there are gaps; most of the dates are in March). Find out more.
