Gruff Rhys celebrates the NHS' 70th birthday at Cardiff Castle with new song "No Profit In Pain"
Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys was commissioned by the National Theatre Wales to write a tribute track to the NHS during its 70th anniversary year.
"No Profit In Pain" arrives on the NHS' 70th birthday, as well as the opening day for National Theatre Wales' NHS70 Festival, which is a, "month-long festival inspired by the staff and patients of this unique institution."
Gruff Rhys performed the new track outside Cardiff Castle earlier today, and shares the visuals of decorating his van used to spread his positive message.
"In most of my songs I mostly deal in lyrical abstraction, but as the NHS has had such a profound effect on every aspect of my life since birth, this was a commission that I felt duty bound to throw myself into out of respect for everything it’s given me," eplains Rhys in the video description.
"As a devolved issue in Wales, and as an idea that was born here, the idea of a free health service for all is something that serves as a beacon of what we can achieve as a nation and is something we must pass on intact to future generations."
The NHS70 Festival commissioned by National Theatre Wales includes performces in venues all over Wales, including hospitals, schools, memorial halls and arts venues in Carmarthen, Welshpool, Wrexham, Bangor and Tredegar, which is where NHS’ founder, Aneurin Bevan, was born.
The Super Furry Animal is renowned for his overtly political music, as his latest best-selling record Babelsberg arrived with a supporting short film made exclusively for Best Fit.
