Grimes to release Fairies Cum First EP before BOOK 1 album
Grimes' new single "Shinigami Eyes" is due to feature on a new EP titled Fairies Cum First, which will be a prelude to her upcoming album BOOK 1.
Yesterday (26 January) Grimes released her Death Note-inspired song "Shinigami Eyes", which was teamed with a Brthr-directed video that features an appearance from BLACKPINK's Jennie.
According to Pitchfork, the new track will feature on an EP titled Fairies Cum First, which is described as a "prelude" to her Miss Anthropocene follow-up BOOK 1.
Grimes told Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe of the song, "This is the label executive decision song. I love the record, but it’s just like, everyone's like, what's the deeper meaning? And it’s like, well, Nino Angelo just really had just watched Death Note and really liked it. Basically, I wrote the whole space opera thing and this is the only song that wasn’t this big narrative plot. Anyway, I actually do really like the song. Sorry. I’m just undermining the marketing strategy."
While speaking to Lowe, Grimes also said she plans to release BOOK 1 as a double album, "I made a bunch of stuff and I just want to make a bunch more stuff. There’s just more kind of sonic, conceptual ideas that I think need to get done to make everything make more sense. And we kind of have two album covers and it seems like a waste to throw on one of them away."
"Shinigami Eyes" follows Grimes' December single "Player of Games".
