Grimes and Elon Musk's X Æ A-12 baby name could be rejected due to California law
Grimes and Elon Musk could be denied the chance to legally name their baby X Æ A-12 because of California law.
On Monday night (4 May), Elon Musk confirmed that Grimes had given birth to their first child, and revealed that they want to call the baby X Æ A-12.
However, it seems that California law could prevent the couple from legally naming their baby with their desired name choice.
TMZ reports that according to a supervisor at the Department of Public Health Vital Records Office in Los Angeles (which is the city where the baby is believed to have been born), it is against California law to include numbers or symbols in a registered name.
While it's not technically illegal to name their child X Æ A-12, family law attorney David Glass told PEOPLE, "In California, you can only use the '26 characters' of the English language in your baby name. Thus, you can't have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like 'O'Connor,' is acceptable."
Glass added that their choice of name on the birth certificate at the hospital could result in it being "rejected and they'll be asked to submit it again."
He also said, "They have an opportunity to appeal the rejection of the birth certificate application but it's unlikely that it will be granted because, again, California ... has been struggling with using symbols."
Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, reveals the "X" stands for "the unknown variable", "Æ" represents her "elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)", "A-12" is a "precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent", and the "A" also represents Grimes' favourite song "Archangel". Although she hasn't confirmed who is behind her favourite song, many fans think it's Burial's track of that name.
