Grime fans start petition for Wiley statue to be erected in East London
When thinking of Bow in East London, you don’t think of its fellow residents Danny Wallace or footballer Ledley King, it is most likely Grime that springs to mind. Now, local fans have wanted to mark the birthplace of the genre by erecting a statue of one of its forefathers. And that means Wiley, not Dizzee Rascal.
The Tower Hamlets-bred MC, avid tweeter and West Country festival-hater is the subject of a new petition at Change.org, with Rinse FM’s Julie Adenuga leading the cause.
The rallying call reads: “Richard Cowie (aka Wiley) has undoubtedly inspired an entire generation. A man who has put his heart and soul into what he believes in and consistently shows passion and perseverance.” Continuing: “Making this happen won’t be strenuous or daunting – it will be a joyous experience for all, with the community pulling together from all over London and it’s surrounding cities.”
