Grammys CEO defends Marilyn Manson nomination: "We won’t look back at people’s history"
Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has defended yesterday's controversial nominations for Marilyn Manson and Louis CK, saying they "won’t look back at people’s history" or "criminal record."
Yesterday the full list of 2022 Grammy nominations were announced, and among them were a few controversial choices, including nominations for Kanye West's DONDA (which is up for Album Of The Year), and Ye's DONDA track "Jail" (nominated for Best Rap Song), both of which feature contributions from Marilyn Manson, who has been accused of sexual assault and abuse.
Comedian Louis CK also received a nomination under the Best Comedy Album category for his Sincerely Louis CK album, despite being accused of sexual misconduct.
Following the controversial nominations, Grammys chief Harvey Mason Jr. responded to Manson's nominations when asked by TheWrap, "We won’t restrict the people who can submit their material for consideration. We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria. If it is, they can submit for consideration."
He added, "What we will control is our stages, our shows, our events, our red carpets. We’ll take a look at anyone who is asking to be a part of that, asking to be in attendance, and we’ll make our decisions at that point. But we’re not going to be in the business of restricting people from submitting their work for our voters to decide on."
