Gormenghast-nodding Frenchman Titus d'Enfer channels the tragic in new video
Titus d'Enfer channels the vocal malaise of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock. The French bookseller sings in French but takes his name from Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast books. Ahead of a Best Fit showcase in Paris in December, he tells us about his sound and influences.
What's your story?
I've been making music for almost 15 years now. This project started as a live improvisation act but I've cleaned myself up a bit now. Although I still use my grandfather's analog synth. He used to play it at the church with a choir...
What are your influences?
When I was a teenager I used to listen to things like Deftones and At the Drive-In. More recently I've been into Animal Collective, Klaus Nomi and French singer-songwriters like Alain Bashung. I also really like Stella Vander, who is the wife of Christian Vander from Magma. Her songs were taking the piss out of the whole Yé-yé movement, it was great!
Someone once told me at a concert that my music was 'epic', like chivalry epic, so that's what I'm trying to channel.
Tell us about "Nature Morte"
The song is about an artist that tries to get famous, and when she can't, she kills herself. In the video, I'm the narrator of her tragic story. It's pretty DIY, I got my friends and family to act and film and edit... I wanted it to look like a painting, a bit like what you see in classical painting but 2016 style!
