Gordi announces second album with tender lead single "Aeroplane Bathroom"
Gordi is back with details of her sophomore LP Our Two Skins, and has shared the tender lead single "Aeroplane Bathroom".
"Aeroplane Bathroom" is the opening track from Gordi's new album, and arrives after last month's "Sandwiches" single, which will also feature on the LP.
Gordi wrote the new track in 20 minutes while on a flight from Australia to Europe in late 2017. She says, "I had that sensation of being trapped so I climbed over the other passengers and tried to escape to the bathroom. The fluorescent lights in those spaces are most unforgiving. A terrible mirror."
She adds, "This song is about feeling isolated. It comes at a very strange time now given we’re all locking ourselves in our homes, 'socially isolating' from our normal functional lives. There is no more dehumanising experience than to be cut off from everything you know. It can plunge you into total despair."
Our Two Skins saw Gordi recruit producers Chris Messina (Bon Iver, Bruce Hornsby, Big Red Machine) and Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Hand Habits, Waxahatchee, Tallest Man), who travelled from Wisconsin to Canowindral, Australia to record the album with Gordi at a old cottage with no wi-fi or phone service.
Gordi, aka Sophie Payten, says of the process, "The idea was about cutting ourselves off from all things, including choice, and forcing us to be a lot more minimalist in the way that we can create stuff. I find I'm much more creative when I'm surrounded by nothing than when I'm surrounded by lots."
She adds of the LP, "A big theme of the record is: there's nothing to hide behind. We didn't have all the bells and whistles. You’re just standing there, with your hands in your pockets going: this is me. This is it. This is all I have."
