GL stream debut album Touch in full

12 July 2016, 11:00 | Written by Laurence Day

Australian synthpop duo GL talk about their debut record Touch and stream it in advance on Best Fit.

The Melbourne-based pair - Ella Thompson and Graeme Pogson - specialise in electrifying noise inspired by funk, soul, and retro pop. It's slickly produced and stuffed with addictive melodies, and provokes visceral reactions... if you can keep your head from nodding, toes from tapping, and body from moving, then your made of sterner stuff than most.

Stream recent single "Hallucinate" below, read our Q&A after, and then check out the full Touch stream at the bottom of the page.

Could you tell us a bit about your new album? How did it come together?

L (Ella): The album has been a work in progress for the last couple of years. We started by writing music to play live and tried out lots of things by playing shows. We recorded bits and pieces at different friends' studios then went on to mix it with the excellent Haima Marriott.

Is there anything you wish you knew going into it?

L: Every new venture comes with lots of learning, things that you can’t possibly know before just giving it a try. This album is building block for us, we get excited to show people what we’ve been working on, sometimes it’s difficult to manage my own expectations.

You've said that the album's about physical love - how do you bring that into the music? What have you done to elicit a physical reaction?

L: I’m trying to make something that is an intimate listen. It’s pretty special that music can make people move inside and out.

What's "Hallucinate" about? How was it written/recorded?

L: The highs and lows of love/life and everything in between, going after someone who has nothing to prove. Graeme made a groove and the bass line stole my heart. I always start writing lyrics by just having a sing and seeing what comes out, the word Hallucinate felt nice to sing.

Are there any moments on the record that you're especially proud of?

G (Graeme): I'm proud of the flow the album as a whole. One of the benefits of a full length album is that you can be more experimental and adventurous, which we did through songs such as "Body Language", "Scully", "Cheap Shot", and the two instrumental cuts.

L: I really like "Honey" and "When Your Love Was Mine".

What's your go-to karaoke song?

L: "Red" by Daniel Merriweather

What should fans expect from your live shows?

L: There’s not many things I love more than playing a show that is felt both ways. To make a space that is inclusive for the audience, so we can try to create a multi-sensory performance.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

G: We're currently deep in a Melbourne Winter, so Summer itself is exciting enough.

L: It has always been a dream to tour over in Europe, so hopefully we get to come and play in the other hemisphere.

Touch is released 15 July via Plastic World/Midnight Feature. Stream it below.
