Girls announce new album 'Father, Son, Holy Ghost'
Girls have just announced what the entire blog world were all hoping and half suspecting – that a new record is on the way. Viral clues were given earlier in the week but now it’s been confirmed that second album Father, Son, Holy Ghost is set for release on 12 September via Matador and True Panther.
Singer Christopher Owens has described the record’s birth, stating that it was created in the “bowels of a San Francisco office building”. “It’s less explorative than previous records” he says “with sound built on the ideas and ears of a much more confident band.” But don’t be afraid of any less passion than what made us so stoked about the band in the first place: “I still know I have to do it. I still love the songs and writing songs.”
The band, who in their songs variably drift between unassuming beauty and uninhibited frenzy, have disclosed the tracklist as follows:
01 Honey Bunny
02 Alex
03 Die
04 Saying I Love You
05 My Ma
06 Vomit
07 Just a Song
08 Magic
09 Forgiveness
10 Love Like a River
11 Jamie Marie
Below you can hear an early version of new track ‘Saying I Love You’, recorded live on KDHX back in August 2009. The song may or may not have undergone significant changes since this acoustic performance, but it hints at a slowed-down Girls leaning towards their Broken Dreams Club EP side rather than that of their more neurotic debut LP.
After that, remind yourself of what kept us going in the gap since the duo’s last record by checking out a stripped-down version of the aforementioned EP’s eponymous and best track, recorded in the same session as the above.
