George The Poet scoops fifth place in BBC Sound Of 2015 poll
George The Poet has been placed fifth in the BBC Sound Of 2015 poll, it has been revealed.
The spoken word artist - real name George Mpanga - uses dance and electronic music to channel incisive socio-political statements. His commentary, coated in a pop-leaning outer shell, is reminiscent in intent with Kate Tempest.
In his BBC Sound Of 2015 interview, he's Mpanga's background is fleshed out: "After studying politics, psychology and sociology at Cambridge University and running poetry workshops for children in London, he is now preparing to release his debut album on Island Records and publish his first poetry collection."
Speaking about his fifth place spot, Mpanga said that "being in the top five is such a big pat on the back. It's like... I'm on track." Discussing his ambitions, he added: "It's all about talking to people in the most creative way possible. My EP, The Chicken and the Egg, is about premature parenthood. Discussing that helps... I learnt that making the words rhyme isn't necessarily the same as making the words matter.
