George Michael's estate say late singer "would have been flattered" by Lorde's "Solar Power"
George Michael's estate has responded to comparisons between "Freedom ’90" and Lorde's comeback single "Solar Power", saying the late singer "would have been flattered".
Earlier this month Lorde made her highly-anticipated comeback with "Solar Power", which featured backing vocals from Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo, and is also the title-track for Lorde's long-awaited third album.
Upon its release, fans noted the similarities between "Solar Power" and George Michael's "Freedom '90" (and Primal Scream's "Loaded"), and now the late singer's estate has responded to the comparisons.
George Michael's estate wrote on Twitter, "We are aware that many people are making a connection between Freedom '90 by George Michael and Solar Power by Lorde which George would have been flattered to hear, so on behalf of one great artist to another, we wish her every success with the single."

After releasing "Solar Power" earlier this month, Lorde spoke to Zane Lowe on his New Music Daily radio show on Apple Music 1 about the similarities with Primal Scream's "Loaded", and revealed she "reached out to Bobby [Gillespie] and he was so lovely about it." Lorde added, "And he gave us his blessing. So let the record state "Loaded" is 100%, the original blueprint for this, but we arrived at it organically. And I’m glad we did."
On Monday (21 June) Lorde unveiled the release date and tracklist for her highly-anticipated third album, which will follow 2017's Melodrama.
