Discover the 6th volume of French underground pop compilation La Souterraine
A new pop scene of sorts is emerging in France, tirelessly unearthed by half-promoter half-label La Souterraine, and, unlike most of the French bands that manage to reach the UK shores, they sing in French.
For more than a year now, the two-man operation has been putting on club nights and curating mixtapes online for free, featuring bands from all over France.
Dig into this sixth volume of their namesake mixtapes, which has no definite genre apart from being something that you could hear when you visit your cooler French friend in his small flat in Paris.
Among others, it features Faune, who make an incredible blend between traditional music, ambient and lo-fi, electronic twee-punk singer Colombey, and the catchy melodies of 2024, who use a bassline that could've come straight out of a Serge Gainsbourg track. It's almost as good as the smell of warm bread coming from the boulangerie in the morning, except that unlike the baguette, it's free.
