Five new French artists you can't miss this month
In this first monthly round-up, we cover five new French electro-pop artists who deserve all your attention.
Juveniles
Juveniles are two young men from Rennes who make smart electro-pop music that brings to mind New Order with hints of Hot Chip. "Someone Better" is the latest single from their forthcoming second album and it bodes exceptionally well for what’s to come.
Agar Agar
Picked up by Cracki Records last year, Agar Agar’s brand of strung-out disco music launched last September with their brilliant debut EP, Cardan. Their latest single, "You’re High", with its driving drumbeat and haunting vocals, suggests we’ll be hearing more great things from them in the near future.
DBFC
DBFC happened when a Mancunian called David Shaw came together with the Frenchman Dombrance. Over three singles and one EP they’ve covered a lot of terrain, from The Charlatans to LCD Soundsytem. If their last single is anything to go by they’ve sold their guitars and bought synths. God knows what they’ll do next.
Joakim
Joakim has been around for a while now, remixing and producing as well as making his own music and running the Tigersushi record label. A talented musician with wide-ranging tastes, his sound takes in everything from jazz to Krautrock to English indie. His latest single Numb is a weird and wonderful mixture, with synths, a fidgety drumbeat, and a slapped bassline that conspire to be irresistible.
Fishbach
Fishbach is from the same town as the precocious French poet Rimbaud and they share a taste for the dark and the dubious. Her eponymous 2015 EP was a paranoiac post-club walk through a monstrous city, and her first full-length record A ta merci goes further, enriching the production and showing off her sunnier side as well.
