Father John Misty was on his best behaviour at his first ever festival headline set last night
Father John Misty preached his world-weary gospel to a rapt congregation at End of the Road last night in his first ever headline appearance at a festival.
The artist formerly known as Josh Tillman, not usually noted for his humility, admitted some nerves about the enterprise, but he needn't have worried - his lushly orchestral, wittily narrative ballads were enthusiastically received, and his stage persona, somewhere between Jarvis Cocker and a crazed preacher was the definition of magnetic.
Some may have bemoaned the lack of controversial comments or beefs initiated, but this slick, confident performance didn't need them. The good Father may sometimes get overshadowed by his caustic tongue, but tonight was a welcome reminder that at heart he's a great musician - and an ever better showman.
