Evolution Music announce the world’s first bioplastic vinyl record
Evolution Music will reveal the world's first bioplastic LP this week in collaboration with Music Declares Emergency's 2022 Turn Up The Volume week.
Turn Up The Volume 2022 kicked off today (19 April) and will run until Sunday (24 April), with Music Declares Emergency set to reveal some announcements, musical offerings and partnerships throughout the week. Ahead of Earth Day 2022 on Friday (22 April) Evolution Music has announced the world's first vinyl record made from bioplastic.
Evolution Music have been researching and developing the project for two years with help from music and sustainability experts, and is described in a press release as "a more sustainable lower impact solution to the toxic impacts of producing PVC vinyl."
According to the press release, National Physical Laboratory ran some initial tests and concluded that the bioplastic formula does not alter the listening experience, and has "improved anti-static properties."
Evolution Music will officially launch the bioplastic LP this summer with a crowdfunding campaign to help fund resources.
Marc Carey of Evolution Music said, "We see this product as the first in a new wave of solutions that will help to address some of the most important issues of our time. Having support and advocacy from leaders in the music industry, particularly those at the forefront tackling environmental and social issues, proves there’s a serious demand to move things forward, to turn around the huge impacts of the music industry, and quickly."
Peter Quicke of Ninja Tunes and the AIM Climate Action Group said, "Vinyl is such an important part of our experience of music, it’s brilliant (and a relief to be honest!) that we now have a non-toxic and sustainable solution to pressing records."
Fay Milton of Music Declares Emergency added, "Artists will be extremely keen to use Evolution Music’s bioplastic for their physical products, it’s a no-brainer, why use fossil fuel-based products when you can now simply choose not to? It feels like the Evolution Music team have quietly just created a revolution."
