Erykah Badu has made a 2020 election documentary, says "Hip hop is bigger than the government"
Erykah Badu has revealed that she made a documentary on the 2020 US election ahead of voting day, and says "Hip hop is bigger than the government".
Badu has joined Apple Music’s Ebro Darden for a new interview titled The Message.
The two discuss the US election, leading Badu to reveal that she's been busy making a documentary on the election ahead of voting day. She told Darden that she had to ask people whether they were Democrats or Republicans, and if they believed the voting system works.
Badu explained that despite people having different opinions on politics, everyone enjoyed a Beastie Boys song she played for them, "They gave these differing opinions and everybody’s was very intelligent and it was their own belief. I challenged them next to put on some headphones and listen to a song. It was Beastie Boys’ "Hold It Now, Hit It"."
She continued, "No matter what they believed, whether they agreed or not on their beliefs, everyone nodded in agreement to the kick of the snare. Hip hop is bigger than the government. Anything that we collectively believe together can change many things… the frequency of everything."
Badu also reiterated that it's important to keep updated on politics even if you don't agree with it, "No matter what we believe, what the powers that be believe will affect us. No matter how many different directions we want to take ourselves and our communities, what the powers that be believe will affect all of us so it’s very good to keep up with what’s going on and the choices the powers that be are making for us."
