Eriel Indigo shares part two of her Galactivate mission statement
L.A.'s Eriel Indigo - part desginer, part performance artist, part activist - is unveiling part two of her Galactivate m.o. now, exclusively on Best Fit.
She's also been kind enough to fill in a few gaps and explain her intentions to us - what's clear is she's ruthlessly ambitious with confidence oozing from every pore. She's got a bold idea to challenge society's preconceived notions about... well, everything. These are grand aims, but she seems to have the vision to present it in a riveting manner. Keep an eye on Indigo - with her striking imagery, pure pop prowess and strident gameplan, there's little that's going to halt her ascent.
Could you explain your 'origin story'?
"I was raised an only child, although I had half siblings I met later on. I grew up with my mother and mostly by myself. I was alone with myself and my fantasies all the time. I had a rich imagination and was always extremely creative, making art, dancing, writing, singing, creating constantly. I had experiences as a small child alone in my room at night where I could hear and see lights and sounds from other dimensions. Sometimes I experienced beautiful things but very often I had night terrors as if I was being psychically attacked by some dark force that did not want me to exist in the light. I had a difficult childhood."
How did has that affected your sound and the way you create today?
"The art and music I create now is very reflective of those extraordinary childhood experiences. I forgot those dark memories for many years and remembered them again later, that’s how I found my way back to the light through creativity and spirituality. I believe I had to experience this darkness so that I could find a reference point and vernacular to communicate with society. Much of my music is about the journey from darkness into light, taking our power back and triumphing over agendas of those who would have us believe that low frequency reality - based in fear, anger and violence - is a normal reflection of human nature, when it’s really a program set in place to control and profit."
What else has galvanised your mindset?
"I also grew up in an environment where all my friends lived below the poverty line, struggling to keep food on the table, living in the woods, some with no electricity, a generator and an outhouse whilst my extended family on my mother's side were wealthy New Yorkers. I saw first hand the uneven distribution of wealth and always felt the need to steal from the rich and give to the poor. Everything in my youth made me want to bust the faulty systems that I saw all around me."
Have any musicians had a profound effect on you?
"I was in love with music and worshipped Madonna and Michael Jackson. Her for her shameless embrace of sexuality, always pushing buttons and boundaries. Him for his positivity and radical inclusivity, his love for entire world, his clinging to childhood and willingness to sacrifice everything to share his message with the world. It was only later that I realized my mission was to infiltrate the mainstream music industry and create conscious pop in place of all the bubblegum bullshit that was born out of 90's pop music and culture."
How would you describe yourself to someone new to Eriel Indigo?
"I wasn't born in a fucking board room. I'm not a concept some asshole in a suit thought up to sell more coke, shallow sexuality, candy, alcohol, hate, disrespect and pharmaceuticals. I'm real. I have something real to say and something pure to share. I don't want to rep bullshit, unhealthy, harmful products to get my face and my ass on a billboard and some millions in my bank account. I recognize the power of music and vibration and the opportunity for a global audience to birth a community where we can actually have a positive effect on our communal consciousness and planet. I care about the content of the music. Yeah, I know that sex sells and I know how to use that, but more importantly I know that sexuality is sacred and spiritual and full of power and magic. I write my own music. I'm not a product. I'm a person and I honor every living being on this planet. My music career is about more than fame and fortune and getting to perform. The fame is a sacrifice I’m making to get this content out into the world. I'm not saying that there aren't fun parts about being a recording artist or that I don't want to be adored and respected like everyone else does, but it’s about much more for me. It's not about selling records or lies that make people feel insecure and angry. It's about seeding a new paradigm of reality that's not such a ridiculous clusterfuck."
You said that sexuality is "sacred" - could you expand on that?
"I would never try to define sexuality. Sexuality takes so many forms and morphs and lives in so many different ways. What I will say is it’s extremely important for our personal, societal, and cultural health to be open in communication about sexuality and seek the vast ocean of sacred and spiritual substance that exists within our own sexuality, rather than focus on the depraved, shallow version of sexuality represented in the media. This also goes into the imbalance between masculine and feminine on this planet both between genders and within each person, male or female. We all need to embrace, respect, empower, evolve and develop our own sexuality and balance the masculine and feminine energies within us. I have always felt I have a pretty balanced makeup of masculine and feminine within me. There are some things out of balance in me as well. My masculine side is a bit immature and very aggressive, cocky sometimes not great in communication. My feminine side is sometimes self destructive, insecure and fearful of vulnerability. I wish for all of us to begin to find our way to the softness in both our masculine and feminine sides and the purity and magic in our sexuality."
Could you tell us about Galactivate? What is it?
"GALACTIVATE is my debut album. It’s a multi-part episodic music/film series that invites the audience into a new vision for life and art on Earth. [It covers] love, light, revolution, empowerment, heckling the music industry and the status quo, questioning people's programming, sexuality. I collaborate primarily with my dear friend and producer, Johnny What. He primarily creates the instrumentals and I primarily create the lyrics and lyrical melody but we do help each other with both from time to time. All the songs on the album will be listed as written, arranged and produced byEriel Indigo and Johnny What."
