Eleanor Friedberger announces new album partly inspired by a visit to an elusive Greek goth disco
US singer/songwriter Eleanor Friedberger has returned with "In Between Stars", the first single from upcoming fourth studio record Rebound.
Rebound marks a new direction for the Illinois-born artist, with the lead cut described as an "homage to '80s dark goth pop". The LP follows 2016's New View and was recorded mostly alone with assistance from producer Clemens Knieper.
"I spent most of 2016 on the road, and I needed to keep that momentum going," explains Friedberger of the album's inspirations. "I had always wanted to spend more time in Greece; take Greek lessons and get to know Athens better while hopefully writing some music. After 8 November, 2016 I set that loose plan into motion. While friends back home were suddenly becoming politically activated for the first time, it was exciting to be living in a city where protest marches occur on a weekly, or sometimes daily basis. I assembled a band of Greek musicians, played a few shows, learned a few more Greek words, but didn't get much writing done. It turned out to be more of a reconnaissance mission."
While in the Mediterranean nation, Friedberger ended up seeking out an elusive "'80s goth disco" named Rebound on the advice of friend Σtella. "It proved to be a revelation in terms of finding the sound and energy for my fourth album," says Friedberger.
Friedberger has also confirmed a few new North American dates and a show at London's Moth Club on 4 April. Find out more.
