David Fincher to direct HBO show based on his experiences directing music videos in the '80s
Acclaimed - and Oscar nominated - director David Fincher is set to helm a new HBO show called Living On Video, based on his own experiences of the music video industry in the '80s.
This won't be his first dalliance with TV, having directed and producer episodes of lauded series House Of Cards, starring collaborator Kevin Spacey. He's also currently steering HBO newcomers Utopia, a semi-remake of the recently cancelled Channel 4 hit, and a noir titled Shakedown, set in '50s L.A..
Industry website Deadline report that although the new series has not been officially "greenlighted to pilot" (i.e. given the go-ahead), casting is underway and Rich Wilkes and Bob Stevenson have been enlisted to write the show.
Deadline continue to say that Living On Video will be "a half-hour comedy about the music video industry in Los Angeles circa 1983" and that the series "will focus on a main character named Bobby, a recent college dropout who heads to Hollywood in the hopes of directing a sci-fi epic, only to land work as a PA at a video production company... Living On Video will reportedly resemble the structure of HBO mainstay Entourage, as Bobby comes into contact with big-name directors, publicists, crew members, and record executives of the 'then-exploding video industry.'”
David Fincher began his career directing music videos for a range of artists, including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Neneh Cherry, Nine Inch Nails and, most recently, Jay Z x Justin Timberlake.
A release date for Living on Video is not yet confirmed.
