David Bowie's first-known demo sells for nearly £40,000 at auction
In July a demo of David Bowie as a 16-year-old was discovered, and has since gone on to sell for nearly £40,000 at auction.
David Bowie recorded "I Never Dreamed" with his first band The Konrads aged 16.
The early demo was rediscovered by David Hadfield, the former Konrads drummer, and manager. It was discovered in Hadfield's grandmother's bread basket when he was deciding to move home.
Primarily the demo was believed to fetch close to £10,000, but has instead sold for nearly quadruple the price.
Music specialists Omega Auctions held the event, which they described as "a bidding frenzy” to The Guardian. The "I Never Dreamed" recording went for £39,360
Speaking to The Guardian about the discovery of the demo, Hadfield explained, “We had decided that we would do a couple of guitar instrumentals and one original song. I chose "I Never Dreamed" as it was the strongest, the other two were a bit weak. I also decided that David was the best person to sing it and give the right interpretation. So this became the very first recording of David Jones singing 55 years ago."
According to the Omega Auctions, sketches by Bowie, who at the time was called David Jones, along with photographs and band documents also went for £17,130.
