Dave receives second Ivor Novello Award in two years
The 2020 Ivor Novello winners have been revealed, and sees Dave receive his second award in the space of two years.
Dave, Little Simz, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth were among the winners of this year's Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate the best in British songwriting and screen composition.
London rapper Dave scooped this year's Best Contemporary Song award for his Fraser T. Smith collaboration "Black", which he performed at the 2020 BRIT Awards on a double-ended piano. This year isn't the first time Dave and Fraser T. Smith have won the award, as back in 2018 they also received the same award for "Question Time". The judges, including Ghetts and Nao, decribed Dave's "Black" song as "important, eloquent and a song that not only empowers, but is borderless in its musicality."
The Best Album award was given to Little Simz and Inflo for Grey Area, while Jamie Cullum was awarded Best Song Musically and Lyrically for his "Age of Anxiety" track.
Little Simz told The Guardian, "This award is really special, because it’s about the power of the pen, and to know that my pen is being respected and acknowledged is a good feeling."
Labrinth picked up the Best Television Soundtrack award for his score for HBO series Euphoria, and Mysie received the first Rising Star Award with Apple Music.
Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man's "Giant", with co-writing from Jamie Hartman and Troy Miller, received the PRS for Music Most Performed Work of 2019.
The Songwriter of the Year award went to Steve Mac (Mabel's "Don't Call Me Up" and "Mad Love"), and Bobby Krlic received his first Ivor Novello award for his Midsommar film score. Simon Poole also picked up the Best Original Video Game Score award for his Draugen game, and the highest honour, the Academy Fellowship, went to Joan Armatrading MBE.
