The Grammy-nominated Gyuto Monks of Tibet have landed themselves a slot at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.
The Gyuto Monks, who are currently touring Australia and have previously sold out London’s Royal Albert Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House, will perform on Thursday 27 June in the Green fields. They will also be creating a ceremonial Sand Mandala to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Tibetan Declaration of Independence.
The Dalai Lama is in favour of their festival show, saying: “The work that the Gyuto Monks do in the west has my full support.”
With the recent announcement of them signing to world renowned record label Universal Music, their forthcoming album, ‘Chants: The Spirit of Tibet’ will be produced by Youth, bassist from post-punk band Killing Joke, who’s production credits include Primal Scream, Paul McCartney and U2.
Thupten Phuntsok of the Gyuto Monks said: “We are honoured to be invited to take part in the world’s premier music and performing arts festival, at the spiritual centre of the site.”
The Gyuto Monks were nominated for Best Traditional World Music category in the 2011 Grammy Awards for their album Pure Sounds. For more information on their latest musical conquests visit their Facebook page.
