Some of the collaborators on Morrissey's upcoming covers album have responded to his political views

Ariel Engle of Broken Social Scene and LP have responded to Morrissey's political views following their features on his upcoming covers album, California Son.

Earlier this week, Morrissey announced a new covers album California Son, which features members from Grizzly Bear, Green Day, Broken Social Scene, The Regrettes, and more.

Since the announcement, a couple of the collaborators have offered up their opinions on Morrissey's political views.

Speaking to The Guardian, Broken Social Scene's Ariel Engle explained about how she got involved, "I thought, "Oh the Smiths, sure"...It was $500 for two hours’ work." She adds she wasn't aware of his political views until a friend questioned her collaboration with Morrissey, "It’s a very weak argument to claim ignorance, but it is my argument. It’s not an excuse but it happens to be the truth."

Having researched his views, Engle explains, "The inflammatory things he says are not my politics. I think he’s completely out of line. I grew up around multiculturalism and I am the product of multiculturalism and immigration. I feel like I’ve been had, but it’s my fault."

The first track to be shared from the forthcoming record was a cover of Joy Orbison's "It's Over" featuring LP. On their collaboration, LP said via a PR representative, "As I’m a huge fan of his music and poetry, I was honoured to be asked to collaborate on the album."

Billy Joel Armstrong of Green Day and Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear didn't give a comment.

Joe Chiccarelli, a US record producer who got Engle on board for the album, said, "I’m a record-maker. I’ve known him 10 years and he’s been a gentleman and a pleasure. I consider him a friend."

The record will see Morrissey cover artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, The Fifth Dimension, and more.

California Son is released 24 May via Etienne Records/BMG. Read the full report over at theguardian.com.
