Co-operative Food supermarkets have unveiled new plans to only broadcast unsigned artists in their UK stores, evoking protests from some of their employees.
The move - which will save the company 50% compared to if they played mainstream acts - sees Co-op signing a deal with licensing agency Emerge, which will provide local and lesser known music for the supermarket’s branches.
The policy has not been entirely well-received by Co-op staff, with employees describing the music played as “diabolical” and “soul destroying”, adding that not even “hipsters” would listen to it.
However, others have described the change as “good for local unsigned artists”.
