Chvrches' Lauren Mayberry speaks out against sexism in music
Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry recently took to the Glasgow band’s Facebook page to post an example of the numerous misogynistic and abusive messages she receives on a regular basis from so-called fans, declaring their creepy and often very intrusive love for the singer. Now she’s written an extended essay on the matter for The Guardian.
In the piece, published online on Monday, Mayberry discusses the problem of sexism in music, focussing on the initial Facebook post, the response it received, as well as misogyny as a wider issue.
Mayberry opins that the synergy between online culture and music, breaking down the barrier between artist and audience, has only increased this issue. “I would not be able to make music for a living without people on the internet caring about our band,” the electro-pop musician writes. “But does that mean that I need to accept that it’s OK for people to make comments like this, because that’s how women in my position are spoken to?”
She continues in her piece to criticise those that sweep the issue under the carpet or ignoring it altogether, saying “Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat? I hope not. Objectification, whatever its form, is not something anyone should have to “just deal with”.”
