Chris Price has been confirmed as the new Head Of Music at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

The stations' controller Ben Cooper says of the appointment:

"Chris brings unparalleled experience across music radio, TV and digital broadcasting to BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. His passion and knowledge is key to our future plans for young audiences to continue to discover the music they will love."

Price's predecessor George Ergatoudis is departing the BBC role in March after years with the company for a "newly created" position at Spotify.

Price describes himself on his New Slang site as a writer and music strategist:

"I specialise in curation and editorial for radio, streaming services, music television, brands and labels, working at the collision course of broadcast and webcast music content. Which is a fancy way of saying I help ears find music."

He has worked with the BBC in the past - for six years he was programming with BBC Radio 1. He was also Head of Music for Last.fm, a music strategist for MTV UK's music channels, and spent "five years in marketing and distribution roles for Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group".

In an interesting February 2015 article, Price gives Internet Radio five tips for the future, and breaks down what current services offer.

He writes at one point:

"I strongly believe that, judiciously selected, some elements of broadcast music programming philosophy can be brought to bear on algorithm-driven music streams. I’m interested in working with data scientists, developers, music intelligence experts, streaming services and music scheduling software companies who share my conviction that internet radio can better."
