Chilly Gonzales offers high praise to Daft Punk, talks new album collaboration
Chilly Gonzales is the newest collaborator to speak about working on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories in their continuing video series.
The Canadian-born musician discusses working through what he calls the “joyful challenge”, mentioning seeing the looks on the duo’s faces upon hearing the early demos of Memories and noting how happy and excited they were.
He also talks about the use and importance of harmony, something he sees as “still an under-used musical weapon” in modern pop music. Naturally, he views Daft Punk as one of the few artists in mainstream music to utilize it properly. ”I don’t really like collaborating, but you make exceptions for people who are in possession of some true key to the zeitgeist,” Gonzales declares.
Best of all, though, is a small preview of music on Memories. Gonzales plays a few melodies from the album on piano to demonstrate his points regarding harmony and composition.
Watch all that in the video below. Random Access Memories is out 20 May.
