Chaos in NYC overnight as Kanye West's pop-up show cancelled
Last night Kanye West attempted to perform a last-minute show in NYC, only for the police to call it off after fans overwhelmed the area.
After day three of the Governors Ball was cancelled following severe weather, Kanye made a surprise appearance at New Jersey's Summer Jam (although that too was plagued with weather issues) with members of his GOOD Music crew.
Immediately after that ended, Kanye went back to the Big Apple and tried to perform his second show of the night at the East Village's Webster Hall.
However, after news of the impromptu gig erupted online, upwards of 4000 devout fans flocked to the area, queuing around the block to get in. Webster Hall itself has a 1500 capacity.
Kanye's wife Kim Kardashian was broadcasting the events on Snapchat, and filmed Kanye asking for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio to allow the show to go ahead: "Call the mayor and shut down the block about four streets and put screens up so they could have a party outside, I heard it was sold out already."
Unfortunately the decision was taken out of Kanye and the Mayor's hands as Webster Hall's management cancelled the show entirely. Kanye did appear to meet his fans, poking out of a sunroof as his vehicle was mobbed by thronging fans that chased him down the street.
Reports suggest that it was a "near riot" and that "mayhem broke out in the streets", with "rowdy masses shoving and crushing each other... climbing on top of dumpsters, scaffolding and mail trucks to get a glimpse of [Kanye]." Police eventually were forced to disperse the crowd, telling fans that the "party's over". It was over two hours after the cancellation before the streets emptied.
Further reports from the police state that no arrests were made.
Kanye recently confirmed that his second GOOD Music compilation, Cruel Winter, is coming.
Kanye's most recent solo record The Life Of Pablo was released earlier this year. A follow up, titled Turbo Grafx 16, is apparently on the way this summer.
