Cabaret Voltaire member plotting 'sound map' of Sheffield
Cabaret Voltaire man Chris Watson has long surrendered his post-punk ways, turning instead to the peaceful recordings of wildlife, and now he’s calling on the people of Sheffield to help map the sound of their city.
Watson has in recent years worked on major projects with the likes of David Attenborough, and is now taking on the huge challenge of collecting noises of Sheffield to create a ‘sound map’ of his hometown, to be displayed at the Millennium Gallery this autumn. He is asking the locals to contribute their own field recordings to go along side his clips of skylarks on the moorlands and rumbles from the city factories.
Each short recordings can be uploaded via Watson’s Soundcloud page and can be made with anything from mobile phones to professional equipment.
Inside the Circle of Fire: A Sheffield Sound Map by Chris Watson, opens on 12 September till 23 February 2014 at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery, you can find more details via the museums website here.
