Braids announce new record Deep In The Iris, and share lead track "Miniskirt"
Montreal electronic trio Braids have detailed a new LP called Deep In The Iris and unveiled a powerful new anthem,"Miniskirt".
The record sees Braids tackle a cabal of social issues - "including pornography, abuse, and slutshaming" - via Braids' trademark electro sincerity and dumbfounding beats. They've been vastly impressive in the past, and lead track "Miniskirt" promises to continue that tradition. They do sound clinically evolved however; Braid's previous output has been masked by darkness and layers of obfuscating electronica, but this offering demonstrates a clarity and newfound focus on lyrics:
"I'm not a man-hater, I enjoy them like cake/but in my position I'm the slut, I'm the bitch, I'm the whore, the one you hate/and there's a name for this kind of man, a soft one at that: womaniser, casanova, lothario/for I see it's just stamp to the head, for them another notch in the bed/it's like I'm wearing red/and if I am, you feel you've the right to touch me, 'cause I asked for it in my little miniskirt..."
It's a striking coalescence of Raphaelle Standell's weighty, Bjork-esque delivery and Braids' solemn production.
Deep In The Iris is out 27 April on Arbutus. It follows 2013's sophomore Flourish // Perish.
