Bombino is the first artist from Niger, and first on Partisan, to receive a Grammy nomination
Partisan's own Bombino is the first artist on the label, and first from Niger to receive a Grammy nomination.
Bombino's 2018 record Deran was recorded at Studio Hiba in Casablanca, Morocco, in his native language Tamasheq.
The musician was exiled from Niger over a decade ago after the Tuareg Rebellion and government banned guitars, resulting in two of his bandmates being killed.
On his website, Bombino explains, "My mission for this album was always to get closer to Africa."
Alongside Bombino, the Best World Music Album nominees include Fatoumata Diawara (Fenfo), Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Black Times), Soweto Gospel Choir (Freedom), and Yiddish Glory (The Lost Songs Of World War II).
