Boiler Room to tour underground music scenes in Africa
Boiler Room and Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky are partnering to shine a spotlight on exciting underground music scenes from countries as diverse as South Africa and Kenya.
From gqom to Nairobi nu wave and eclectic afro-fusion, True Music Africa will tell the stories of the varied music scenes sweeping the continent and the key innovators in each space who share the ‘hustle mentality’ – all via compelling documentaries and live-streamed parties to bring Africa’s True Music scene to a global stage.
The Cape Town show features some of the country’s most well-respected original self-starters, including K$, Dope Saint Jude, Youngsta CPT, Aux Womdantso and DJ Lyle. It will all culminate in July when Johannesburg will play host to the True Music Forum, a space for the international music community to learn, exchange and build new ideas through panel discussions and workshops. Look out for further information on speakers and panel topics coming mid next year.
“Africa is full of diverse sounds and artists pioneering creativity," says Patrick Venning from Ballantine’s. "As the influence from a vast range of music genres across the continent is increasingly felt in European and American production, global tastemakers are looking towards their thriving underground scenes for inspiration...this time around we’re looking forward to going back and getting even deeper under the skin of diverse nightlife cultures with True Music artists.”
Blaise Bellville, Boiler Room Founder & CEO adds: “Our vision for this project has been to work with artists who have crafted not just the sound, but often the ground up infrastructure of hyper-local music communities as well.”
