Bo Rocha: "The best things happen musically when your conscious mind is quiet."
London-based producer/singer Bo Rocha speaks to Best Fit ahead of her show at The Great Escape in Brighton.
Rocha is performing on our stage tomorrow (19 May) at Brighton's Komedia stage. Postiljonen, Highasakite, and Pumarosa are also playing - check out the full lineup.
She recently shared new single "Hold My Gaze", which is out 27 May via Bait and Switch. We spoke to Rocha about the track, what to look forward to in 2016, and who she's planning to catch at The Great Escape.
Could you tell us a bit about "Hold My Gaze"?
It’s about going back to a time where you didn’t say everything you wish you had and rewriting it. It’s an ideal, fantasy version of a confrontation, letting someone know that their love comes with neglect.
Where do you find inspiration for new music?
In every day life, in people and moments. Ideas will often come to me when I'm walking or on the train so you can find me trying to inconspicuously sing into my phone in public. Otherwise I like sitting at the piano and working my way round chords. When you hit on something special it sparks a physical feeling. I’m always chasing that feeling.
What's the first thing you do when you go into the studio?
Try and empty my head. The best things happen musically when your conscious mind is quiet. And then I down an espresso.
What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?
Some new material which I’m excited to play for the first time. Adding live drums in particular has been a great experience, they give me such a buzz. Everything sounds bigger.
How do you feel when you're on stage?
Like I’m at home, liberated.
Are you looking forward to catching anyone else at the festival?
Yes definitely. I never give up the chance to be in Brighton for a few days. I’m going to try and get over to see Let’s Eat Grandma, Loyle Carner, and Smerz.
Can you recommend any acts we should check out?
I’m really intrigued by Smerz, I’ve not seen their show yet but on record they remind me of my friend Tirzah. And my boys MONEY because they’re just so good live but you knew that already.
What are you working on now?
I’m in a good writing space right now so trying to capitalise on that. Some visual things too, I’ve been getting more into making videos so they’re coming together at the moment.
What's next from Bo Rocha?
This summer will be about more songs, more shows, more writing. More of everything.
