black midi deliver striking new single "Slow"

28 April 2021, 16:36 | Written by Cerys Kenneally

black midi have shared new cut "Slow" today (28 April) as a second preview of their forthcoming album Cavalcade.

After delivering lead single "John L" with the non-album b-side "Despair" last month, black midi have unveiled a second single called "Slow", which is teamed with a Gustaf Holtenäs-directed video.

Holtenäs says of the video, "The "Slow" video was made to fit the oscillating dynamics of the song. Going from calm to chaos over and over again. The video tells the story of a character who creates AI-generated worlds. To emphasise this, I let real AI’s generate a lot of the backgrounds in these worlds. So they are partly AI-generated, but It isn’t long before an AI could create the whole deal and create endless iterations of fantasy worlds. It can already create a random beautiful landscape painting in 1 second."

Cavalcade will follow black midi's 2019 debut album Schlagenheim.

Lead vocalist Geordie Greep says of their approach, "It’s easy to get wrapped up in the improvisation myth of divine intervention, that if a song doesn’t happen in the room naturally without it being guided by someone specifically, when we’re all just feeling the vibe, then it’s not proper and it’s not pure. That's kind of a dangerous thing because you end up never trying something different, or you just abandon an idea if it doesn’t work at first because you’re always waiting for that thing to arrive perfect."

Drummer Morgan Simpson adds, "The experience this time round was completely the flipside to Schlagenheim. A lot of the material was really fresh but that was something that played into our hands and we relished it."

"Slow" is out now. black midi's Cavalcade album will be released via Rough Trade Records on 28 May, and is available to pre-order now. They're due to play London's Alexandra Palace Theatre on 11 November. Find out more.
