Best Coast say third album is inspired by the 90s and Drake
Best Coast recently released a stopgap EP, or “mini-album” as they’re calling it, in the form of Fade Away. But instead of doing exactly what the title says, the band have revealed they’re already starting work on their next full-length record.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, singer Bethany Cosentino revealed that they’re working with Butch Walker on the release, aiming to put it out at the “beginning of year”.
Cosentino also says that while their debut was inspired by the Sixties, and their second by the Seventies, this is more of a 1990s homage. “I started listening to a lot of Nineties stuff when we did Fade Away and I was really happy with that EP and those songs, Cosentino tells the publication. “I felt like I wanted to almost do something that was an extension of that, almost like that EP is leading you in to our new record.”
The California native also spoke at length about her love of Drake, quoted as saying: “This is going to sound totally weird, but Drake is a huge inspiration. It’s not going to be a rap record, but in terms of lyrics and emotion. I cannot stop listening to Drake. I am obsessed. It’s ridiculous how obsessed I am.”
She continued: “My lyrics have always been straightforward and honest and not sugarcoated but this time around I was like “Okay I’m going to say what I have to say and I’m going to feel like Drake about it. I’ll just say it”.”
