BBC make U-turn on Top of the Pops re-run axe
BBC are gone back on their decision to drop re-runs of Top of the Pops after facing public outrage at their decision.
The Beeb were originally considering axing the archive shows after postponing them in the aftermath of the Jimmy Saville sex scandal.
Now, however, BBC Four controller Richard Klein has confirmed that they’ll continue to run as usual.
Klein told The Guardian:
“There was an enormous response from the public. I got a lot of emails from people saying they wanted us to maintain replaying those Top of the Pops from 1978.
Looking at it, we decided we will not be showing either the DLT or Jimmy Savile fronted shows but that left us plenty of Top of the Pops to show.
We decided partly because we have agreed we are going to do it, and partly because I felt it was right that these things be aired.
We are going to carry on for the foreseeable future. If things change, we’ll change.”
