Dreaming of a psych Christmas: Baywaves debut a festive cover and chat about their plans for 2017
Spain's self-proclaimed "hipnopop" merchants Baywaves have covered festive staple "Santa Claus Is Coming To Down".
The bubbly classic is drizzled with a sugary psych gloss in the hands of Baywaves - it's not quite so full of bug-eyed pep, and instead they make the track a gorgeously chilled affair.
Born from the thriving Madrid DIY scene that's spawned the likes of Hinds and The Parrots, Baywaves are a fascinating prospect bursting with dreamy, sun-kissed melodies and chilled-out atmospheres. They offer something very different to what's come from the scene before, and instead of the bombastic garage hooks, they've got intricate layers of psychedelic glitter for us to shovel into our ears.
Take a listen to their seasonal single below, and then get to the know the band a bit better with our Q&A after.
Could you introduce yourselves for us please?
Hi there, we are Baywaves from Madrid and we play music, something between pop and psychedelia. We released our debut EP last year and we've been touring since.
What do you try to do with your music?
On one hand we love making music, melting catchy melodies with cool textures, layers of effects… we also love playing live, making people dance. And we love travelling, going to new cities, meeting new bands. When you are on tour the band becomes like a family and then you share this feeling with the public. Sounds quite cheesy, but it’s kind of unique.
Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
Well, we are big consumers of pop culture. Everything from comics to cinema, memes, obscure Soundclouds... musically we all have different backgrounds but if we had to choose musicians who influenced us as a band we would probably agree on Kendrick Lamar, Homeshake, Connan Mockasin, King Gizzard... also being from Spain right now means that we’re part of a really cool environment, with bands like The Parrots or Hinds crossing frontiers, Agorazein and PXXR GVNG heating up the country, or exciting new acts such as Alien Tango, One Path or Sorry Kate emerging… in a way, it feels good to be an independent band here these days.
What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
It’s our third time in London and we are really excited to play at The Lexington. I would say that our shows are a mix of shakethosehips songs with dreamy instrumentals, so we hope everyone is up for some ethereal dance moves.
What are you working on next?
We’ve just recorded a couple of singles which are being mixed right now, and we are planning on releasing them sometime soon. We also have another EP almost finished so 2K17 is lookin' good.
What do you have planned for the coming year?
We were planning on taking a short break but then Hinds offered us to open for them in an enormous venue in Madrid, then the Five Day Forecast thing happened and we got announced for Eurosonic, so no holidays at all! We are planning on touring around Europe again with the next release, and hopefully come back to UK pretty soon after January.
