Bandcamp extends Bandcamp Fridays until May 2021
Bandcamp has announced that they will be extending their Bandcamp Fridays in the new year, up until 7 May 2021.
To support artists amid the current coronavirus pandemic, Bandcamp has been giving up its revenue shares for 24 hours on multiple Fridays, meaning artists have received full payments for merch and music sold via Bandcamp to hopefully provide some money to artists that they've lost following festival/tour cancellations due to COVID-19.
The first Bandcamp Friday took place on 20 March, and within 24 hours the site sold more than $4.1 million. Bandcamp continued to give up its revenue shares on the first Friday of each month in May and June too, and decided to carry it on for the rest of 2020 back in July.
This afternoon (15 December) Bandcamp has provided another update on their Bandcamp Fridays initiative, revealing that the company will extend it until 7 May 2021. While there'll be no Bandcamp Friday on 1 January 2021, it will resume from 5 February, and take place on 5 March, 2 April and 7 May.
As well as providing some good news for musicians and music fans around the world, Bandcamp revealed that across the nine Bandcamp Fridays that have taken place so far, they've sold $40 million worth of music and merchandise with help from nearly 800,000 fans.
