Asobi Seksu guitarist James Hanna announces debut album under Youth Worship name
James Hanna, former longtime guitarist of Asobi Seksu (who split in 2013), is set to release his debut album with new band Youth Worship.
"Eternal Scene", the debut single, features Wata from Japanese band Boris. It moves away from the dreamgaze output of his former project, and although still markedly fuzzy around the edges, wields a bolshy punk vibe - wait for the chaotic wig-out at around the two minute mark and you'll see exactly how much the two bands differ.
Recorded live in the bands Queens practice area, with extra bits finished off in Hanna's mother's Long Island home, it's record that also sees Hanna venture behind the glass and tackle producing for the first time:
“It was a weird nostalgia trip blasting a Marshall stack in my childhood bedroom; my mom had much more patience for it than she did back when... I actually think she secretly enjoyed it...
"I learned a lot while making this record by just trying things out. The most important thing for me was that our chemistry and the energy we create when we play together shines through in the recording.”
Will Donnelly and Larry Gorman, the drummer of Asobi Seksu, also feature in the band.
Youth Worship is out 30 June on Self Harm Records.
