Anti-Thatcher campaign song 'Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead' charts at number 2
‘Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead’ from The Wizard Of Oz has charted at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart over 70 years after its initial release, following a protest campaign sparked by the death of Margaret Thatcher.
The track, performed by Judy Garland with the cast of the 1939 film, saw a midweek surge as a mouthpiece for those speaking out against the reign of the former Prime Minister, reaching the top spot of both the iTunes and Amazon MP3 charts.
The BBC had announced earlier in the week that they’d only play a “four or five second clip” of the song, only 56 seconds in length, after coming under pressure from some for promoting the campaign.
Another anti-Thatcher song reaching the Top 40 this week was by punk band Notsensibles, with their track ‘I’m In Love With Margaret Thatcher’ at number 35.
You can read a list of 10 other political tracks banned by the BBC here.
