Anna Calvi announces third album with lead track "Don’t Beat The Girl Out Of My Boy"
Anna Calvi has taken her time working on new material. "Don't Beat The Girl Out Of My Boy" is the first single to be lifted from her upcoming third album, Hunter.
As 2017 came to a close Anna Calvi hinted that her new album was getting closer to completion. Without wanting to rush her talent, Calvi has been locked down, perfecting and making tweaks to new album Hunter.
As she makes lead single "Don't Beat The Girl Outta My Boy" public, it becomes apparent that Calvi is pushing the boundaries of her vocals to create dramatic soundscapes that are near theatrical. She explained, "It’s a song about the defiance of happiness. It’s about being free to identify yourself in whichever way you please, without any restraints from society.”
The video is directed by recent Kendrick Lamar collaborator, William Kennedy.
Calvi allowed some famous faces to help put her new release together. Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Grinderman), Calvi also welcomed Adrian Utley from Portishead on keys and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds on bass, alongside her usual band.
Hunter is expected to be an open field for Calvi exploring themes of feminism, sexuality, gender, power, as she explained further, "“I'm hunting for something - I want experiences, I want agency, I want sexual freedom, I want intimacy, I want to feel strong, I want to feel protected and I want to find something beautiful in all the mess."
"I want to go beyond gender. I don’t want to have to chose between the male and female in me. I’m fighting against feeling an outsider and trying to find a place that feels like home."
