Amen Dunes unveils "Miki Dora", the first track from new LP Freedom
New York City-based artist Amen Dunes has returned with new song "Miki Dora" and details of fifth studio record Freedom.
"Miki Dora was arguably the most gifted and innovative surfer of his generation and the foremost opponent of surfing’s commercialization," says Amen Dunes (aka Damon McMahon). "He was also a lifelong criminal and retrograde: a true embodiment of the distorted male psyche. He was a living contradiction; both a symbol of free-living and inspiration, and of the false heroics American culture has always celebrated. With lyrics of regret and redemption at the end of one’s youth, the song is about Dora, and McMahon, but ultimately it is a reflection on all manifestations of mythical heroic maleness and its illusions."
Freedom follows 2014's Love and was recorded mostly at Electric Lady in his home city, with the rest done at Sunset Sound in LA with Nick Zinner and Gus Seyffert (Beck, Bedouine). Chris Coady (Beach House) produces the album, with Rome-based musician Panoram contributing in "significant, if subtle" ways.
Amen Dunes will be headed to London for a show at the Omeara on 2 May. Tickets are on sale now.
