Amazon and HMV announce huge increase in sales of turntables
Retailers HMV and Amazon have announced massive sales of turntables this Christmas.
Ian Topping, HMV's Chief Executive, dubbed turntables the "gift of the year in 2015" when he spoke to The Scotsman. He also said that HMV were selling a turntable a minute.
Amazon have announced similarly strong sales, with the Jensen JTA-230 3-speed stereo turntable with built-in speakers proving a particularly popular present. The Vinyl Factory suggest that the popularity of this "entry-level" model means a lot of people are receiving their first piece of hardware.
John Lewis have also reported a leap upwards of 240% when it comes to turntable sales.
This news arrives as reports up to a third of people purchasing vinyl records don't even own the equipment to play them.
Gennaro Castaldo of the BPI told The Scotsman: “The vinyl revival is one of the fairytale success stories of recent years. Having faced near-extinction in 2007, when only 205,000 LPs were sold, it’s likely we’ll see the best part of two million copies purchased this year. People of all ages are reconnecting with the format, including a new generation of engaged younger fans drawn to its emotional appeal at the heart of rock music’s heritage."
