Aluna Francis of AlunaGeorge discusses sexual assault by collaborator on BBC podcast
AlunaGeorge singer Aluna Francis has discussed being sexually assaulted by a collaborator on BBC podcast The Next Episode.
Francis has spoken about how a collaborator attemped to force her to perform oral sex in a hotel room after asking for a phone charger.
Although she hasn't revealed the name of her alleged attacker, Francis said, "I feel like I have a radar for like, pervy guys, right, I assume you all do. I thought I was at a stage of my career where I was untouchable, and I had been around so many men and done lots of things like worn boys clothes and I will shake your hand really strong, and I'm always so clear about how musically oriented I am, I've never slept with anyone in the whole industry, there's no rumours about me, so I thought I was untouchable, and I thought that me and this person had a connection musically."
After going to his hotel room to charge her phone, Francis explained, "It was like I was in a room with a completely different person. His behaviour went from nought to a hundred."
The AlunaGeorge singer details the attack, and reveals that she was "pinned down" and had to "wrestle him off". She adds, "he thought it was a game and that I was having a really fun time having a pretend rape situation."
Speaking about her reaction to the attack, Francis said, "You would think that I understood how wrong this was straight away and I didn’t. Musicians are crazy ambitious about getting their craft out there. And that’s why I think there’s so much shame about these kind of situations: Am I that stupid? What is wrong with me? Why have I compartmentalised all of this just for my career? That’s madness."
Francis told the BBC that she tried to speak to the alleged attacker about the situation, "He did all his apologies and talked about how he was so incredibly sorry and [that] this has never happened before."
